Buffalo Bouncing Back To Future!
Restoring landmark structures seen as key to retooling economy.
This onetime "Queen City Of The Lakes", wants to use its fine old buildings to improve its image, reports USA Today on 14th December 2009. Examples including the Darwin Martin House (1906), one of architect Frank Lloyd Wright's finest work. A twenty year $50m restoration is nearing completion and this is likely to be amongst the most visited Wright tourist sites in the Nation.
Buffalo has many other noteworthy buildings - some 80 sites are registered in the national register of sites of historic interest - including the Central Railroad Terminal built in 1929.
Civic leaders believe that Buffalo, like Pittsburgh which is further along the regeneration path, can hitch the cities reputation to vintage architecture. Peter Brink, vice president for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, says Buffalo has the potential to be a model for success.
There is gold in glorious architecture, says Donn Esmonde, Buffalo News columnist
Buffalo's buildings are important because this was one place, more than a century ago, where designers and architects broke with European styles and developed a uniquely American architecture. There are eight National Historic Landmarks which represent a deep source of architectural gems.
In 2009 the National Trust named Buffalo as one of it's top 12 national tourist destinations and has been selected to host the National Trust's 2011 conference.
So Buffalo continues to keep the focus on good buildings, especially ones by Frank Lloyd Wright.
